Q: What exactly is Green Tea? Is it a different tea than the tea we
usually drink?

A: Green tea is processed in the way that the antioxidants called catechins, such as EGCG, are preserved in their original forms. The tea we usually drink is black tea, which underwent complete oxidation, eliminating most of the antioxidant potential of these catechins to maximize flavor and taste. Both green tea and black tea are made from the leaves of same tea plants but black tea was stripped of most health benefits in its processing.

Q: We hear so much about the antioxidants in Green Tea. Exactly what are “antioxidants” and why do researchers claim they can improve our health?

A: Antioxidants are molecules that can react with and therefore eliminate free radicals. Our body produces free radicals. We also receive free radicals from many outside sources (our environment, medication, food, etc.). If these free radicals accumulate, they can do a lot of harm by causing cells to become unhealthy

Q: I’ve heard of things called “free radicals.” Exactly what are these and how can Green Tea protect my healthy cells from them?

A: Free radicals are very unstable and active molecules that react with the building blocks of our body by removing electrons. If our normal molecule loses the electron, it may cause damage. For example, free radicals react with DNA and cause DNA damage, leading to mutation, if not repaired. Green tea, rich in antioxidants, helps to protect DNA or cells against these harmful free radicals by eliminating them.

Q: Does Green Tea have less caffeine than regular tea or coffee?

A: Green tea has much less caffeine than coffee, and usually has less caffeine than black tea. Generally speaking, regular green tea contains 2-4% caffeine. Green tea’s caffeine gives a calm alertness but not the jitters of the caffeine in regular coffee.

Q: Can drinking Green Tea or using products that have Green Tea extract in them really help suppress the appetite? How?

A: Scientists at University of Chicago showed that EGCG might interact specifically with a component of a leptin-independent appetite control pathway to reduce the appetite. Human studies are needed to confirm this. It is very important to eat right and exercise in order to lose weight.

Q: Is Green Tea beneficial when trying to lose extra body fat? If so, how does it work?

A: Human studies suggest that green tea consumption reduced body weight, body fat and helped burn calories. A healthy diet and regular exercise are important, just as burning fat and calories is always a key tool to losing weight or even maintaining your ideal weight. You should envision adapting a healthy life style with green tea as an important component and integral part of your daily regimen.

Q: Does Green Tea fight fatigue? Can it cause the same nervousness or insomnia that caffeinated coffee can?

A: Evidence from studies demonstrated that green tea even reduced symptoms of the serious problem of chronic fatigue syndrome. Green tea also increases energy expenditure and therefore reduces fatigue. However, green tea’s calming catechins do not cause the “caffeine effects” of nervousness, insomnia or jitteriness.

Q: Can drinking Green Tea or using products with Green Tea extract improve my overall health and my body’s ability to fight disease? If so, why?

A: We are aging every day. Our body, our organs, tissues and cells are getting older each day. Components in green tea help us to slow down this aging process by protecting the cells and molecules in our body.

Q: How do you release the full potency of Green Tea?

A: You need to consume it throughout the day to elevate the green tea catechins in your system all day long. Green Tea is at maximum potency (most powerful and beneficial to your health) exactly at the time it is mixed with water, thus, many pre-made and bottled green tea drinks have lost most of health benefits, which may only last about three days after the liquid is mixed with the green tea. Other than drinking a cup of freshly made green tea, the most effective green tea is in a pill, a powder drink mix or a dry form like a green tea gum or mints

Q: Is it true that Green tea can rejuvenate and heal damaged skin?

A: True, many studies have indicated that green tea catechins like EGCG protect our skin from harmful agents and improve skin condition.

Q: Can a cream or gel containing Green Tea help reduce scars?

A: Green tea helps to heal wounds and accelerate skin cell differentiation. Reducing scars is one of the end results.

Q: What is the minimum amount of Green Tea I should consume daily to get optimum health benefits? Can I ever take too much Green Tea?

A: Asian people drink green tea in large quantities, up to a dozen cups, which may contain hundreds of milligrams of green tea catechins (polyphenols). EGCG is the most abundant green tea catechin that often takes 50% of the catechin content. But ideally the equivalent of 6-10 cups of tea is what I recommend per day. The equivalent of 90 mg of EGCG has been suggested to help in weight loss and the maximum needed is 180 mg per day of EGCG catechins.

Q: What are some of the other ways I can incorporate Green Tea or Green Tea extract into my diet and skin care routine for the best results?

A: You can add various products that contain green tea to your daily routine. Fresh-brewed green tea or green tea in the form of caplets or powder yields the most active potency of green tea. The powder form can be put in water or other drinks for full benefits, if you drink it within a few hours. Those pre-made ‘green tea drinks’ in bottles or cans could be just flavored drinks without the real green tea benefits, which may have oxidized away in the drink within a few days after production.

Ordinary skin care products contain oxidized green tea, which has lost potency before it’s even put on the skin’s surface. There are only a few special formulations that retain the green tea potency, giving all its benefits to the skin—quickly advancing younger skin cells to the skin’s surface regenerating its appearance.

Q: Do you think diet supplements, skin and nail care products containing Green Tea extract are beneficial?

A: Yes, but regular green tea extract is not stable, which is oxidized with time, without penetrating the skin barrier. Thus, it is very important to select the right products and those formulas that keep the power and potency preserved until you use it.

Q: I noticed that there are Green Tea chewing gums and mints. What exactly are the benefits found in these products?

A: Green tea gum and mints are designed to preserve the activity of green tea in a dry environment. They can deliver a healthy dose of green tea catechins into the oral cavity and into our body; just the same way as getting these potent benefits from drinking cups of green tea. What’s important is that green tea remain in its dry form (tea bag, loose tea, pill, caplet, gum, mints) because once it is put in water the potent benefits begin a process of losing the natural power to enhance the health of your body and skin.
